See, I've always wondered about that for these boys, since as far as I can tell, a very large portion of what they actually did has been left decidedly vague in the games. Granted, I've spoiled myself insanely for Exile and Revelation, but have yet to actually play them myself, so it's definitely possible that I've missed something fairly important.
But, from my current perception we know they marched around and acted adorably dictatorish in quite a few of the Myst ages. We know at least some of the ages they were in now appear to be uninhabited. We know Achenar had some... interesting toys in his rooms, and I'm sure the rotting head-in-a-box in Mechanical Age didn't walk there all by itself. We know Sirrus had plenty of toys of his own, many of which did not originally belong to him.
So, as far as I can tell there's quite the huge spectrum of possible evil that they could have done, ranging from relatively mild to OMGHitler. I've always seen Achenar as a bit of sadist, but I also think he was smart enough to reserve most of the torture and killing for people he wanted to make an example of, in order to keep the power thing intact for him and Sirrus.
Sirrus I think would be more likely to see killing as an occasionally neccesary, yet distasteful chore, and he probably prefered to let Achenar do most of their actual dirty work. To me he seems to be interested in the things that people could provide him, rather than much of anything about the people themselves, so it might have been in his best interests to keep subjects alive for the most part.
Hee hee!!! I've had fanthings running all around in my head too, lately. Now I want to write the boys all ickle and precious and future-evil-ish. Because they must have been the cutest little things ever.
