O HAY I FINALLY GOT IT DUNNING DONE.

ANGEL OPENING A DOOR .. a Hotel Dusk: Room 215 fanmix

You've checked into Angel Opening A Door, a fanmix for the incredible Nintendo DS game Hotel Dusk: Room 215. If you have a DS, you should do it a favor and buy this game. It is all kinds of wonderful. You are Kyle Hyde, an ex-cop (now a traveling salesman) searching for an old friend of his that he shot (long story, that one) -- Hyde gets sent to this hotel in the middle of nowhere, where he meets a colorful cast of characters. At first, they all seem normal, but as Kyle starts talking to people, he unravels a web so convoluted and wrong that he feels like he should stop -- but surprisingly, unraveling this whole thing is getting him closer to finding his friend...

BEWARE: There are minor spoilers in this fanmix -- I don't give whole storylines away. Cause one of the best parts of this game is finding out these people's dirty little secrets for yourself. ;D

1.) "ALL I NEED" .. etro anime

[instrumental]

1979. Southwestern United States. Hotel Dusk. The rooms have numbers and names. Moonlight Grill is the hotels restaurant and the bar is known as Seven Stars. Three employees, all of which live at the hotel as well. A tad rundown, but quaint. A little too quiet.

2.) "THNKS FR TH MMRS" .. fall out boy

[ but its the wrongs that make the words come to life
who does he think he is?
if that's the worst you've got
better put your fingers back to the key

one night and one more time,
thanks for the memories
even though they weren't so great
he tastes like you, only sweeter

they say I only think
in the form of crunching numbers
in hotel rooms, collecting page six lovers
]

Kyle Hyde. "Wish" -- Room 215. A thirty-three year old ex-cop from the NYPD who shot his former partner Brian Bradley three years earlier, after Bradley double-crossed the police during an investigation into a ring of art thieves. It's now 1979 and Kyle works for Red Crown, which is a door-to-door sales company based in L.A. It's run by an old family friend of his, Ed Vincent -- who also has a business on the side which locates lost items that clients don't want found by innappropriate people. Kyle helps him with this side business, and is sent to Hotel Dusk to retrieve a couple items for a client.

3.) "THE APOLOGIST" .. r.e.m.

[ did you understand me right, the people here are good
they tell me what I should have done and offer what I could
i'm good, all is good, all's well, no complaints
when I feel regret, I get down on my knees and pray
]

Brian Bradley. Kyle Hyde's former partner and the one Kyle is searching for. He wears a bracelet with his sister's name engraved on it. He was shot on the docks by Hyde after becoming a turncoat and selling out the police -- he fell into the Hudson River but his body was never found. Hyde didn't think he was dead and is now hoping that this business he is in with Ed Vincent will help him find Bradley -- the man who has been leaving him clues for three years. Kyle Hyde found it odd when someone with his own name checked in to Hotel Dusk six months earlier -- could it have been Bradley?

4.) "MORE" .. virgos merlot

[ a perfect sky
a twitching eye
needing only one thing to get by
let it hide
fall to the side
try to do it in but it won't die
]

Ed Vincent. Hyde's boss and an old friend of his father's. He runs Red Crown, a door-to-door sales company around L.A. -- along with a side business he gets Hyde to help him with. A gruff sort of man with connections to the LAPD, and the only person from the start that knows Kyle is looking for Brian Bradley. He also tells Kyle that when he gets to Hotel Dusk, he should be expecting a package.

5.) "PHONE CALL" .. the faint

[ i've seen you awhile now
long enough to be close
there's some things about you
that I should know, I still don't
with all the questions we didn't ask
our conversations could never last
our moments alone were scarce and few
it was just easier to hide the truth
]

Rachel. Ed Vincent's secretary and a hard-worker, Rachel ends up staying late at work the night Kyle is at the hotel. She's a frequent contact to Hyde and helps him out with some research and such during the long hours of the night. She usually refers to him in affectionate terms such as "sweetie" and occasionally, Kyle is seen breaking his cool exterior and reciprocating the cute talk. Maybe there's something going on there...

6.) "DESPERATE NOW" .. stabbing westward

[ so why does everything seem desperate now
i should be feeling so alive
but it feels like something's missing
something's wrong somehow
it feels like something deep inside has died
]

Dunning Smith. Hotel Dusk's manager, boss and owner. He's forty-nine and doesn't take any shit. From anyone. He welcomes Kyle to his "own little slice of heaven" upon his arrival and is quick to check him in. He's the one who named the rooms after stories he had heard from the guests and is also a man with too many secrets -- when you think it's only the guests with things to hide, you're quick to find out it's not. Dunning gets a little suspicious of Kyle throughout the night.

7.) "HEADLOCK" .. imogen heap

[ we’re a different pair, just something out of step
throw a stranger an unexpected smile
with big intention, still posted at your station
always on about the day it should have flown
]

Rosa Fox. Hotel Dusk's maid and cook. A forty year old woman with a heart of gold and who does the work of at least ten people. When you see her, she's usually either cleaning or cooking -- or taking care of Mila. She's very jovial at times and makes a damn fine steak. She becomes an important ally to Kyle during his impromptu investigation of the hotel and helps him get into things he probably shouldn't.

8.) "FLUORESCEIN" .. abandoned pools

[ wipe away the summer air
you don't wanna see
that's you in that photograph from 1973
and you don't even know me
]

Louis DeNonno. Hotel Dusk's twenty-five year old bellhop, waiter and bartender. Except the only job he really does and enjoys is bartending. He does a horrible job with the rest of his assigned tasks. Kyle recognizes him as a pickpocket he used to catch back in the Big Apple. After his friend was killed in New York, Louis moved out west and got a job at the hotel. Like Rosa, Louis is a big help to Kyle, using his old skills to help Kyle get into places -- again -- that he probably shouldn't be in. He's a bit of a flirt, but horrible at it, but he can mix a damn good drink. He's also usually seen freaking out with his hands on his head, exclaiming, "TRIP, MAN!" Oh, Louie.

9.) "PRECIOUS" .. depeche mode

[ things get damaged
things get broken
i thought we'd manage
but words left unspoken
left us so brittle
there was so little left to give

angels with silver wings
shouldn't know suffering
i wish i could take the pain for you
]

Mila. A mute girl in white that Kyle saw walking along the road on his way to the hotel; she ended up arriving with Jeff Angel. He found her walking on the side of the road, with nothing in her hands except a Hotel Dusk brochure. Rosa takes her under her wing and brings her to her quarters to rest. Kyle thinks Mila has something to do with all the things going on and once he unravels it all, he finds out she's a key player.

10.) "VELVET DIVORCE" .. sneaker pimps

[ i'd sooner sell it cheap
then trap this limbo culture
it takes a gun to clear
this stone that we've been under
you still take me wrong
i don't need understanding
let the damage sing
i'm asking i'm demanding
this taste of dilution
velvet divorce
i get bored
i get bored
]

Jeff Angel. "Belief" -- Room 213. A snarky little bastard, this one. He's nineteen and seems worried about something whenever Kyle comes across him. He brought Mila to the hotel after finding her walking alongside the road. She had a brochure for Hotel Dusk in her hand and once he got there, he checked in and just left her in the lobby. He's often in his room stewing over something and is seen leaving Kyle's room at one point, when Kyle's not there.

11.) "THERE IS NO MATHEMATICS TO LOVE AND LOSS" .. anberlin

[ if you're leaving, leave the cigarettes
you've already got the lighter and the keys
she packs her boxes, he knows that she's serious
not by the look in her face but the lack of rings
words lost their meanings long ago
right around the time when she let him know
]

Kevin Woodward. "Bravery" -- Room 219. A thirty-five year old man at the hotel with his daughter, Melissa. The two seem to get into a lot of fights and Kevin always questions Kyle when he sees Kyle talking to his daughter. He's a surgeon and seems very distraught throughout the course of the night, stressed and wringing his hands all over the place. Kyle doesn't think he takes very good care of his daughter when at separate times during the night, he is down in the bar alone and his daughter is locked in an abandoned hotel room. Father of the year award, anyone?

12.) "THE DREAM" .. the birthday massacre

[ she never did what they told her to,
and they'll never see her dream come true
the edge of revelation, believing all the stories told
a final moment taken before this story's end unfolds
]

Melissa Woodward. "Bravery" -- Room 219. The eight year old daughter of Kevin Woodward is first seen by Kyle putting together a puzzle on the stairs up to the second floor of the hotel. She gets all snotty when he tells her to move and he decides snot right back, reducing the brat to tears. She warms up to him throughout the evening, just as he does to her. She misses her mother and seems to be a bright spot to Kyle during the later, more dreary hours of the night.

13.) "NO ONE" .. cold

[ well I can't ever really believe
no one was sent to get me
and I feel like I'm being erased
no one got left here
i'm all alone
no one was sent to get me
]

Iris. "Success" -- Room 216. Across the hall from Kyle, Iris is a forward woman of thirty and one of the first things she says to him is a snarky comment about how she didn't want anyone in any of the rooms near her. She's at the hotel for a specific reason, but she won't really let anyone know why. She's seen in the bar a few times and also near the restaurant, where she seems distraught that Melissa Woodward doesn't seem to like her.

14.) "MR. WRITER" .. stereophonics

[ mr writer, why don't you tell it like it is?
why don't you tell it like it really is?
before you go on home

i used to treat you right
give you my time
but when I'd turn my back on you
then you do what you do
]

Martin Summer. "Honor" -- Room 211. The fifty-year old author of the book The Secret Word and quite the rambler, his pompous manner of speech grates on Kyle's nerves more often than not. He was expecting a package too, and thanks to Louie, his got mixed up with Kyle's, which is what brings the two of them together. Kyle gives him what was in the package and Summer mentions there was a bookmark with it -- it had an angel on it. And for some reason, he wants it as soon as possible.

15.) "SNOWDROP" .. roland orzabal

[ the calm before the storm
the bitter taste of mediocrity
turning you inside out
i'm waiting in the wings
no news of joy - just more hypocrisy
oh what a strange affair
we belong together
]

Helen Parker. "Angel" -- Room 212. A seventy year old woman who came into the hotel right after Kyle and requested the Wish room. She's a sweet woman and warms up to Kyle during the night, asking him to help her to her room and asking if she'd want to get a drink with him later. They get the drink once the bar opens and Helen comments on what a nice drinking partner he is. She seems innocent enough, but everyone hides things -- and Parker is no exception.

16.) "SOMEONE MUST GET HURT" .. she wants revenge

[ as I stare through you
and I stand quite still
and an alarm sounds just up the road
i can tell you'd some sympathy
but I can't fix you
when you don't want me
]

This whole ordeal is based on relationships, but almost each and every one of these relationships are built upon lies. And once Kyle digs under everyone's little fibs, he lays out a plot that gives him answers he seeks. It also serves to give him that many more questions. By the end of the night, some relationships are ruined, some are saved, some questioned -- but something that resonates throughout it all is that people need to stop lying to themselves before they can stop lying to other people.

17.) "WALK THIS EARTH ALONE" .. lauren christy

[ you're in the doors that keep revolving
the sirens that keep screaming
you're in the flashing of the headlights
the things that I'm believing

you're in the water that I'm drinking
the sound of 911
the walls that protect me
from the damage that you've done
in this world you are with me
]

Each and every person in the hotel the night of December 28, 1979 had lost something or someone.

18.) "ENJOY THE SILENCE" .. lacuna coil (depeche mode cover)

[ words are very unnecessary
they can only do harm
vows are spoken
to be broken
feelings are intense
words are trivial
]

And so ends that one really long night. What's resolved? Who knows. But the sun breaks the horizon and everyone goes about their lives.
