You know, looking to video games for a politically correct agenda is a bit defeatist-- am I to complain that Xenogears is not a fair representation of the Catholic Church? Besides, it's not like they're going out of their way to present different ethnicities in a negative light; Shadow Hearts is a little bit farcial sometimes, so to take it seriously is not advised. Besides, Shania is damned sexy.

Rai's actual ethnicity was never specified. To assume that he is black is just that-- an assumption on your part. Your anger is baseless. And to tell you the truth, I actually thought he was supposed to be have Middle Eastern inspirations, as reflected in his storybook traditional attire.

And for all you know, Ansem could be of asian descent-- the people of the Philippines and Cambodia tend to have darkly tanned skin. Not that this matters, because FINAL FANTASY IS FICTIONAL. With characters mostly based on FICTIONAL JAPANESE FANTASY TRAITS.

In conclusion.
Not to be snarky, but complaining that video games don't have affirmative action is, well, it's silly.

I don't remember what Rai's speech patterns were in Japanese, but I can only guess that the "ya know" might've stemmed from his tagging some extra politeness to the end of his sentences, or some other speech trait, i.e. "da"/"ya". In the same way that they translated maybeKansai-ben!Cid into Southernaccent!Cid. (I went on a bit about Kansai-ben in this entry of TK's; but, like I said in aforementioned entry, I can't confirm Cid.)

Fuu, she spoke in single kanji. And as the English language does not have a logographic equivalent alphabet, they worked it out as single word outbursts; albeit, this does make her seem angrier and less eloquent in English.
